Flower Care & Tips

Floral arrangements will last on average 4-7 days or longer. This depends on the flower varieties used and the care they receive. We recommend these tips for longer lasting flowers.

For Boxed/Loose Bunches of Flowers

  • Take a knife or pair of scissors and cut 1-2 inches off the stems.
  • We recommend keeping flowers in a cool/dry place until they can be placed in a flower food solution. Make sure you follow the directions on the flower food packets!

  • When you receive your flowers, place them in a deep, clean vase filled with water and then add the flower food that was provided/purchased.

  • Make sure to remove all the leaves that are below the waterline. Leaves left below the waterline will promote microbial growth that could potentially limit the water uptake by your flowers.

For Your Floral Arrangements

    • Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water. Flower foods make flowers last longer but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Most packets are to be mixed with either a pint or a quart of water. Flower foods should not be diluted with more water than is specified on the packet.

    • Should the water in your vase become cloudy or opaque, pour it out and replace it with fresh water. Making sure not to crush the stems, re-cut the stems and remove one-two inches with a sharp knife or pair of scissors. Then, replace the stems in the solution.

  • Flowers should be kept in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, heating/cooling vents and ceiling fans as they tend to last longer.

Selecting Your Flowers

  • When selecting flowers, look for flowers with upright, firm petals and buds beginning to open. Yellow, spotted or drooping leaves are signs of age.

  • When you are selecting your flowers, we recommend that you
  • When using woody stems and branches (such as quince, forsythia or lilac), cut the stem with sharp pruning shears. Place them in warm water containing fresh flower food to promote flower opening.
