A village named for a miller
The first settlers took up land along Yonge Street here in 1794. Benjamin Thorne arrived from Dorset, England, in 1820 and ran a gristmill, a sawmill and a tannery, and the settlement became known as Thorne's Mills, then Thorne's Hill, and finally Thornhill. Today, both sides of the old village are Heritage Conservation Districts, so you may find yourself sending flowers to a house much older than the neighbourhood around it.
