A postwar suburb beside an old village
Rexdale takes its name from the builder Rex Heslop. In the early 1950s he bought farmland north of the planned Highway 401, starting with a 100-acre farm east of Islington Avenue. The Etobicoke Historical Society records the first sale in April 1952, when 40 employees of aircraft maker A.V. Roe agreed to buy homes on Allenby Avenue. The old McVean's Road became Rexdale Boulevard in 1954, and Heslop's Rexdale Plaza opened in 1956.
Thistletown is much older. It was planned in 1847 for John Grubb, a Scottish settler, and first went by the name St. Andrew's before it was renamed for a local doctor, William Thistle. Its core is still the corner of Albion Road and Islington Avenue. Nearby, Rowntree Mills Park recalls the 19th-century settler Joseph Rowntree, and the Franklin Carmichael Art Group on Riverdale Drive is named for the Group of Seven painter. Both communities became part of today's City of Toronto in 1998.
