Thank You Flowers: What to Send and What to Write

The short answer: a bright, cheerful bouquet in a vase is the safest thank you, because it arrives ready to display and suits almost anyone. Match the size to the favour, choose warm colours such as yellow, orange or pink, and keep the card short and specific: say what they did and why it mattered.

A thank you with flowers is remembered long after an email is forgotten. Here is how to choose the right flowers for the person and the moment, and what to write on the card.

Who to thank with flowers

  • A host after a dinner, a holiday stay or a party.
  • A colleague or manager who covered for you, mentored you or helped land a project.
  • A client at the end of a project or the start of a new relationship.
  • A teacher, coach or caregiver at the end of a school year or a season.
  • A neighbour or friend who watched your pets, shovelled your driveway or brought a meal.
  • A nurse, doctor or care team after a hospital stay, where the unit allows flowers.
  • Family and friends who sent flowers or support when you were going through a hard time.

Choosing thank you flowers

There is no wrong flower for a thank you, but a few choices make the message clearer.

  • Bright and warm colours. Yellow suggests friendship and appreciation, orange suggests warmth and enthusiasm, and pink says gratitude and affection. Mixed bouquets in these shades feel cheerful without being romantic.
  • Avoid a dozen red roses. Red roses read as romance, which can send the wrong message to a colleague or a host. Pink, yellow or mixed roses are a better choice.
  • Choose a vase or a basket. The person you are thanking should not have to hunt for a vase. Arrangements in a vase or basket are ready to set down the moment they arrive.
  • Think about scent. For an office, a shared space or someone with sensitivities, a lightly scented bouquet is more considerate than strongly fragrant lilies.

Matching the gift to the favour

A small favour calls for a small gesture. A compact bouquet says thank you without making the person feel they owe you something in return. Our flowers under $60 are a good place to look. For a bigger favour, such as a long stretch of help, a mentor's support or a client relationship, a larger arrangement or a premium bouquet shows how much it meant.

Plants and gift baskets as a thank you

Flowers are not the only option. A potted plant or an orchid lasts for months, which makes it a thoughtful thank you for a desk or a home office. See our potted plants and succulents. For an office team, a gourmet or snack basket is easy to share. Our gift baskets are made to order, so place your order at least one day ahead.

What to write on a thank you card

The best thank you messages are short and specific. Name what the person did, and say how it helped. A few examples:

  • "Thank you for a wonderful evening. We are still talking about the dessert."
  • "Thank you for covering for me this month. I could not have done it without you."
  • "Thank you for taking such good care of Mom. Your kindness meant the world to our family."
  • "Thank you for your support on this project. It has been a pleasure working with you."
  • "Thank you for the beautiful flowers and your kind words. They brought real comfort."
  • "Thank you for looking after the house while we were away. Dinner is on us next time."

Sign with your full name if the person might not know you well, such as a nurse or a client contact, and add your company name for a business thank you.

Timing

Thank you flowers are best sent soon, ideally within a few days of the favour or event. That said, a late thank you is always better than none. If weeks have passed, simply say so: "I have been meaning to say thank you for weeks."

Sending to an office

When you send flowers to a workplace, include the person's full name, the company name, the floor or suite, and a phone number for reception. Many offices have a front desk that signs for deliveries, so a clear address helps your flowers reach the right desk the same day.
