The Village in the City, and a planned district by the lakes
Streetsville is known as The Village in the City. Timothy Street founded the community, the land opened for settlement in 1819, and it became a village in 1858 and a town in 1962, before joining Mississauga in 1974. The Queen's Hotel from 1855 still stands, the Bread and Honey Festival has been held here since 1973, and the Mississauga Santa Claus Parade now starts on Queen Street at Britannia Road.
Meadowvale has an older village at its heart. Irish settlers led by John Beatty established Meadowvale Village in 1819, and in 1980 it became Ontario's first Heritage Conservation District. The newer district around it is linked by parks and trails between two largely man-made lakes, Lake Aquitaine and Lake Wabukayne, with the Meadowvale Community Centre on the shore of Lake Aquitaine.
