The short answer: the best Mother's Day flowers are the ones that match her. If she loves a classic look, a bouquet of pink roses or mixed roses is hard to beat. If she enjoys gardening or would like something that lasts, a potted plant or an orchid is a lovely choice. Choose a design that arrives in its own vase or pot, write a real note on the card, and order early, since Mother's Day is one of the busiest weekends of the year for florists.
Start with what she likes
A few quick questions make the choice easier.
- What colours fill her home? Soft pinks and lavenders suit a calm, traditional room, while bright mixes look great in a sunny kitchen.
- Does she have a favourite flower? If you remember the flowers from her garden or her wedding, use that. It shows you were paying attention.
- Does she like strong scent? Oriental lilies have a big perfume that some people love and others find too much. Roses and carnations are gentler.
- Are there cats at home? Skip lilies altogether, since they are toxic to cats.
Popular Mother's Day flowers
- Roses. Pink roses are a Mother's Day favourite because they suggest gratitude and admiration without feeling too romantic. Mixed rose bouquets are a cheerful alternative. Browse our roses and pink flowers.
- Lilies. Big, generous and elegant, they suit a mom who loves a statement on the dining table. See our lilies.
- Mixed bouquets. A garden-style mix of roses, carnations and seasonal blooms feels warm and personal, and it works when you are not sure of a favourite.

Plants that keep going
A plant is a wonderful gift for a mother who loves her garden, or for anyone who would like a reminder of the day that lasts for months. An orchid is elegant and easy to keep, and our orchid care guide explains how to help one bloom again. Succulent and green planter gardens are low care and suit a bright windowsill. Gifts for other mothers in your life
- A grandmother. A compact arrangement that sits easily on a side table is often the best fit, especially in a smaller home or a care residence. Include the room number and a phone number if she lives in a residence.
- A new mom. Her first Mother's Day is a big one. A bright, cheerful bouquet is a good choice, and our guide to new baby flowers has more ideas.
- A mother-in-law or stepmother. Something classic and pretty is always safe. A mixed bouquet in soft colours lets the gesture speak for itself.
- A mom who is far away. Flowers can say what a phone call cannot. Send something that arrives in its own vase, so she has nothing to do but enjoy it.
- Remembering a mother who has passed. Some families send flowers to a sister or to a parent on this day, in her memory. A note on the card about what you miss can mean a great deal.
Where to send them
Most moms are home on the weekend, but check her plans first. If the family is getting together at a sister's house or a restaurant, send the flowers to her home the day before, or to the host's home, so they are there when everyone arrives. Flowers left at a restaurant are hard to carry home, so her own address is usually the better choice.
Adding a little extra
A box of chocolates or a small plush bear can round out a bouquet, and our gift baskets are a nice option if she prefers treats to flowers. Gift baskets are made to order and need at least one day's notice, so plan a little ahead.
What to write on the card
Every order includes a free handwritten card. A short, specific line is better than a long general one. A few examples:
- "Happy Mother's Day. I am who I am because of you."
- "Thanks for every lunch, every ride and every late-night call."
- "To the best grandma in the world. We love you."
- "Your first Mother's Day! You are already doing an amazing job."
- "Thinking of you today, and of Mom. Love you."
Timing your order
Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May in Canada. Sunday delivery covers a smaller area than our Monday to Saturday routes, so check our delivery map and zones, and consider a Saturday delivery so that she can enjoy the flowers all weekend. Ordering a few days early also gives you the widest choice.
