A mill village that kept its main street
William Berczy brought the first settlers to this part of Markham Township in 1794. The name Unionville comes from Union Mills, built by Ira Allen White in 1839 and named for the Act of Union of 1840. Toogood Pond began as the mill pond and is now a popular walking path. At the north end of Main Street, the Varley Art Gallery honours Group of Seven artist Fred Varley, and the Stiver Mill from 1916 now serves as a community centre with a farmers' market.
Main Street itself nearly disappeared. The Unionville Festival began in 1969 to oppose a plan to widen the street to four lanes, and the village is now a heritage conservation district with many 19th century homes. You may even recognize it from the first season of the television series Gilmore Girls, where it stood in for Stars Hollow.
