Five and Ten, and a district named for its orchards
Cooksville began in 1807 as Harrisville, named for its first settler, Daniel Harris. Jacob Cook built the Cooksville House tavern at Dundas and Hurontario in 1829, and the settlement took his name in 1836. The crossing was once the meeting of Highway 5 and Highway 10, and some locals still call it Five and Ten. A large brickyard also operated west of the village from 1912 to 1995.
Applewood takes its name from the apple orchards that once covered the area. It stayed mostly rural until the mid 1950s, when building began on the old Kennedy farm at Dundas Street and Tomken Road, and neighbourhoods such as Applewood Acres grew up around it. Many of the Applewood Acres street names remember early pioneer families.
