New Baby Flowers: What to Send and When

The short answer: send new baby flowers once the family is settled at home, usually in the first week or two after the birth, and choose a compact arrangement, a basket or a living plant that is easy to care for. Soft colours, a balloon or a plush bear make the occasion clear, and a short, warm card message matters more than the size of the gift.

Here is how to choose, when to send, and what to write, so your congratulations arrive at the right moment.

When to send flowers for a new baby

Timing is the part most people worry about, and there is no single right answer. These are the usual choices:

  • At home, in the first week or two. This is the safest and most popular choice. The parents are home, they have time to enjoy the flowers, and nothing gets left behind at the hospital.
  • A few weeks later. Gifts tend to arrive in a rush right after the birth and then stop. A bouquet in week three or four, when visitors have slowed down, is often the one parents remember.
  • At the hospital. Possible, but check first. Stays after a birth are often short, and some units limit flowers. If you would like to send to the hospital, read our guide to sending flowers to someone in hospital, and call the unit before you order.

If you are not sure, ask a close family member when the parents expect to be home, and send it there.

What to send

New parents have their hands full, so the best gifts are the ones that need almost no work. A few ideas that suit the occasion:

Arrangements that arrive ready to display

A basket or a bouquet already in a vase can go straight onto a table, with no hunting for a vase or trimming stems. The Adorable You Basket, with lavender roses, spray roses, mini carnations and snapdragons, is soft and sweet and needs no vase. The Blushes of Pink Basket is a generous mix of pink lilies, roses, snapdragons and gladiolus.

Bouquets made for a boy or a girl

If you know the news, a themed design makes your message clear the moment it arrives:

A living plant

A potted plant keeps growing long after cut flowers fade, which makes it a fitting gift for a new beginning. It also asks very little of tired parents: water now and then, and that is about it. Blooming Garden 1 brings flowering plants and greenery together in one container, and our plants and succulents include orchids and low care succulent gardens.

Add a little something

A plush bear or a balloon turns flowers into a keepsake. You can add one to your order, and both make the new baby theme clear even with a mixed bouquet.

Choosing colours

Pink and blue are traditional, but they are not the only choice. Soft yellow, white, lavender and pale green are cheerful and work for any baby. If you are unsure of the parents' taste, a gentle pastel mix is always a safe and pretty pick.

Some people prefer to avoid heavily scented flowers in a home with a newborn. If that is a concern, ask us for a design with lighter scented flowers, or choose a plant.

What to write on the card

Keep it short and warm. Parents read every card, often more than once. A few ideas:

  • "Congratulations on your beautiful new baby. We can't wait to meet them."
  • "Welcome to the world, little one. Love from all of us."
  • "So happy for you all. Thinking of you as you settle in at home."
  • For a group: "Warmest congratulations from everyone at the office."

Add the baby's name if the parents have shared it, and sign with your full name if the family might not recognize a first name alone. Every order from us includes a free handwritten card.

Sending a gift to the hospital

If the family is still in hospital, include the patient's full name and the unit in your order, and check first that flowers are allowed. We deliver to hospitals across the GTA, including Credit Valley Hospital and Mississauga Hospital. A plant or a small arrangement is easier to carry home than a large bouquet.

Ordering from Mystic Flowers

Every bouquet and basket is hand-arranged in our Mississauga studio. We offer same-day delivery of fresh flowers across the GTA, delivery is free on orders over $50, and every order includes a free handwritten card. Questions about timing or a custom design? Call us at 905-677-9999.
